Paul Larson, an artist known for his evocative and introspective works, was born in 1951 in Greenwich, Connecticut, USA. From a remarkably young age, drawing representational objects seemed instinctual to Larson as he sought to decode and understand his new and perplexing world.
His formal education was grounded in public schooling, where he found on-going encouragement from deeply impactful high school art teachers Shirley Jankowich and John Fitzgerald. His quest for higher artistic understanding led him to pursue Fine Art and Art History at university level, where, under the mentorship of William Gerhold, and the renowned watercolorist, Charles “Chick” Peterson, his vision and technique took more profound forms.
Post-graduation, Larson took the path less conventionally followed, merging creativity with a practical career. Between 1973 and 1985, he worked as an artist, designer, and eventually, collection coordinator and project director for a well known wallpaper design and manufacturing company. This industrial creativity laid the foundation for his next significant leap—the opening of his own art studio “Mirage” in 1986, joining the fledgling Stamford Loft Artists, nestled in the historic Yale & Town Lock Factory building in Stamford, CT.
Larson’s artistic inspiration draws deeply on a desire to demystify the world he inhabits. His subject matter often delves beneath the surface reality, searching for enduring truths waiting to be unveiled. Unique to his work is an adeptness at crafting highly stylized yet intimate scenes that reveal both outer and inner realms, presenting worlds unseen and unfathomable, conveying ideas and emotions that defy simple linguistic explanation.
His works have graced innumerable exhibitions across Connecticut and beyond, earning him awards and recognition over more than five decades. His art, capturing a range of mediums from drawings to pastels, acrylic, and oil, has found homes in private collections both in the USA and internationally.
Critics and admirers often describe Larson’s art as a fusion of the sensual, spiritual, and industrial, invoking deep reflection and stirring heartfelt emotions. To Paul Larson, the creation and appreciation of art is not mere luxury but a fundamental human necessity. His lifelong journey through the art world underscores a belief that artistic expression and reflection are vital to society’s spiritual and intellectual nourishment.
